Long-Context Positional Regression Testing: Evidence Shifting, Distraction, and Truncation Gates
Evidence that works at the beginning may be missed in the middle. Build position-controlled metamorphic cases and block model or context-assembly regressions using worst-position performance rather than averages.

A long-window endpoint accepting a request proves only that the bytes entered the service. It does not prove that critical evidence is used reliably regardless of its position. The original Lost in the Middle research showed that changing the position of relevant information affects long-context tasks, while LongBench provides a multitask long-context evaluation framework. This article does not revisit the architectural choices in Long Context vs. RAG, nor does it treat Prompt Engineering's "put important content at both ends" guidance as an acceptance criterion. The goal is to subject every release of a model, tokenizer, template, or assembler to the same positional regression tests.
Memory Consolidation handles the integration of persistent facts, while KV Cache Admission handles memory pressure. Here, we neither summarize the input nor load-test throughput. We only test whether business assertions change after the same semantic evidence is shifted, surrounded, or truncated.
First define a shiftable sample contract
Each case separates the immutable task from the variable layout. evidence uses synthetic documents or authorized, de-identified documents and identifies the claim each document can support; distractor is topically similar but cannot establish the answer. The builder constructs lengths and positions under the target tokenizer and records the final token spans. It must not infer them from character offsets.

The position matrix uses both relative quantiles and absolute token spans: beginning, early-middle, midpoint, late-middle, and end, across multiple total lengths. Every variant keeps the question, evidence bytes, logical relationships among evidence items, and output schema unchanged; only the padding blocks move. Padding comes from a deterministic in-domain corpus, avoiding random words that are obviously irrelevant. If shifting changes role boundaries or semantics derived from document order, it is not a valid transformation and must be represented as a different class of case.
The oracle must identify which evidence was missed
For extraction tasks, prefer exact field matching, numbers and units, evidence IDs, and citation spans. For question-answering tasks, check required and forbidden claims and require the model to abstain explicitly when evidence is insufficient. Model judges evaluate only expressions that cannot be assessed deterministically, and both the judge version and rubric remain fixed. Multi-evidence cases cover ordering, negation, exceptions, and conflicting evidence. A "needle" containing a random passphrase does not represent genuine synthesis ability.
Before execution, freeze the cases, positions, repetition counts, decoding parameters, seed sets, primary metrics, and stopping rules. Each (case, length, position) uses the same seeds for paired repetitions of the candidate and baseline. Execution order is randomly interleaved so that provider drift across time periods is not mistaken for a positional effect. Reports retain paired differences, the worst position for every case, the range across positions, missing claims, and incorrect citations. They do not let a global average conceal middle-position degradation.
The release gate uses a predeclared bootstrap or binomial confidence interval and documents family-wise error or FDR control for comparisons across multiple positions and lengths. A single stochastic failure cannot by itself establish a stable regression, while a high-risk forbidden claim immediately triggers a separate safety review. Slices must cover at least language, task risk, evidence count, single-hop versus multi-hop reasoning, and total length. Each slice has minimum case and valid-repetition counts. Insufficient samples are marked INCONCLUSIVE and cannot be pooled with larger slices to approve a release. The quality gate compares the lower confidence bound of the candidate relative to the production baseline while also constraining absolute accuracy.
Separate assembly errors from model degradation
The pipeline first performs structural checks on the final rendered bytes: every evidence hash is present, spans are within bounds, the total token count matches the contract, and service-side echoes or local encoding show no silent truncation. It then runs the same model on both an "evidence-only short input" and the complete variant. If the short input also fails, the task or model capability is at fault. Failure only on the long variant points to position, distraction, or assembly.
Fault injection includes a tokenizer upgrade shifting positions, a gateway trimming the tail after reserving space for a tool schema, a retriever reordering documents with equal scores, a template adding a lengthy safety passage, a serializer duplicating one distractor, and a provider's actual window being smaller than its catalog configuration. Assert that the builder either regenerates exact spans or rejects the fixture. Never continue testing with stale offsets. The dual run described in Tokenizer Compatibility Migration can separate encoding changes from model changes.
Also add evidence absent negative cases, cache-hit and cache-miss controls for the same evidence at different positions, and both single-evidence and multi-evidence combinations. Prompt prefix caching may change only prefill cost, not the assertions. If the hit and cold-request groups diverge systematically, treat it as a runtime correctness incident rather than evaluation noise. Agent Replay Evaluation can preserve layouts from real incidents, after which this matrix can generate positional variants.
Bind releases and rollbacks to the complete runtime specification
The candidate model first runs the complete matrix offline, followed by shadow runs on de-identified production layouts. The release record binds the model, tokenizer, template, assembler, test set, and analysis-plan digests. Production monitoring breaks down missing citations, abstentions, truncation rejections, and positional differences by language, risk, context length, and evidence quantile, without recording raw Prompts.
When degradation occurs, roll back the complete runtime specification, not just the model alias: restore a compatible combination of tokenizer, template, and assembler; invalidate caches based on the old length and prefixes; and turn newly failing layouts into permanent cases. If the old model is no longer available, temporarily reduce the permitted window, switch to retrieval followed by short context, or reject high-risk tasks. Do not continue claiming support for a length that has not passed the worst-position gate.
